At last my columns from @newscientist will be outside the paywall one week after publication. YAY!!! Now you can read the FULL TEXT of my latest, which is about the writers' strike and what happens when AI starts replacing authors. https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg25934500-700-unions-strike-to-save-the-world-from-bad-tv-and-movies/
Unions strike to save the world from bad TV and movies

The threat of AI-authored content hangs over many creative industries. Journalists, actors and screenwriters need to push back against automation, says Annalee Newitz

@annaleen @newscientist Thank you. Given how bad these AI generated scripts are, they are likely a self limiting prophesy.

The usual answer is a somewhat ominous "just give it time". The threat isn't the technology itself but our speculation of where it will go. We have a remarkably bad track record at that.

I'm not saying there isn't a problem. I'm just saying that the current threat is poorly understood and likely exaggerated. This won't stop stupid producers from doing stupid things though

The site has an all over banner that says "This article is free to registered users", but if you click the X it'll let you read it anyway. If you didn't mention that it's not paywalled, I (and others) would have clicked away.

@ablackpanther I was just excited that my column is no longer paywalled because it has been for the past few years.
