If you are seriously considering new default software for video meetings, don’t discount Signal.

Signal allows up to 40 people in the same meeting.

Using Signal Desktop, you can share a screen or separate window while on a call. You can share your screen if no one else is presenting. Your own video will not be shown while you are presenting.

To start or stop sharing while on a call, select the presenting icon with the box with an arrow pointing up.

Why Signal?

”State-of-the-art end-to-end encryption (powered by the open source Signal Protocol) keeps your conversations secure. We can't read your messages or listen to your calls, and no one else can either. Privacy isn’t an optional mode — it’s just the way that Signal works. Every message, every call, every time.”

Signal Messenger: Speak Freely

Say "hello" to a different messaging experience. An unexpected focus on privacy, combined with all of the features you expect.

Signal Messenger
@axbom Agreed. People never consider this. Especially now with the Zoom news, it seems more appealing.
I wonder how much it would take to make this interesting in a corporate setting.
@axbom my only issue with this is the need for phone numbers by everyone, or that changed, and you don't need phone number to register?
@potato_lisper I agree, this is a disadvantage. But less of a dilemma in situations where everyone’s phone number should already be known by all participants.

@potato_lisper @axbom
Telegram could also be an alternative. There I know for sure you can hide your number (and even sign up without one).

Group Video Calls

Today's update lets you turn on your camera or share your screen during Voice Chats in groups – on all devices, including tablets and desktops. This brings voice chats to a whole new level, ready for online classes, business meetings and family gatherings.

@axbom Signal is great. Agreed!
Any chance to use Signal without the phone number? If not, this is a no go for professional use

@axbom
"To use the Signal desktop app, Signal must first be installed on your phone."

@chris Gah. I actually did not know that.
@axbom For meetings with less than 10 participants, I have had positive experience with jitsi. For larger audiences, BigBlueButton might be the best solution.
@axbom Any idea if people have done any kind of data processing agreements in the GDPR sense with the Signal Foundation?
I would expect it to be a dealbreaker that it is a US legal entity.
@mjj It's an interesting point. The way it works Signal doesn't store any information about its users nor any chats... they're all on the user's device. As long as one trusts this, it doesn't matter if a government can request data, Signal doesn't have it.
@axbom Right. I assume there is a routing, but if it is E2EE with local key, there is not much fun in that.
