@emilynordmann gave a fascinating session today on the use of chatGPT in education. It's a tool that exists and students are going to use it, so how do we teach them to use it well and responsibly?

Intro to ChatGPT

Intro to ChatGPT session on 8th August

A really interesting question: what are the data protection issues around uploading student essay content or qualitative data transcripts to chatGPT?
Outstanding point about AI and academic misconduct: "If you can't or won't define what is and what is not and appropriate use of AI for an assessment, you're not ready to penalise a student for using it"

The Russel Group in the UK has put forward a set of prnciples on AI in education:

* Universities will support students and staff to become AI-literate.
* Staff should be equipped to support students to use generative AI tools effectively and appropriately in their learning experience.
* Universities will adapt teaching and assessment to incorporate the ethical use of generative AI and support equal access.
* Universities will ensure academic rigour and integrity is upheld.
* Universities will work collaboratively to share best practice as the technology and its application in education evolves.

@debruine A very interesting point. But I wonder the consumer version of chatGPT cant handle (though if we use command line and a powerful gpu-driven computer could) that a long thesis?
@hjying There are a lot of different figures online for token limits, but some quote up to 64K words for chatGPT 4.
@debruine Yeah, good point. I think in the near future with a newer version of GPTs, we may even feed in a full textbook..
@debruine @emilynordmann
these slides are great.
Thanks for sharing these resources!
(I'm especially happy to find these since I wanted to attend to a talk about this at #SIPS2023 (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qtDocponZJUQQAN3Cec63tEWO3v5gDvHjekZ-q0iolw/edit) but it was in a parallel session and I couldn't find the recording)
