@vantablack of course they would enforce this client-side lmao
@vantablack Wait a second... Three strikes junk? So if I get "caught" three time they yank my YouTube? Is this only is chromium browsers or something more sinister?
@literalgrill @vantablack Universal afaik. They've been A/B testing it for a while now. If the anti-adblock mechanism detects failure to load ads, it will warn you before blocking playback based on your device/browser fingerprint, and if you're logged in, blocking your account from playing YT videos.
@ironcatzion Gr...I'll try to add this all in then, I'm glad the info is out there to help folks!

@literalgrill I'm hoping for maintainers to include it in default filtering lists, too.

It's gonna become a cat and mouse game of course, and enshittification will eventually win, but that's gonna be a pyrrhic victory :3 if they lock audience out of YT, both the audience and creators are going to look for alternative platforms like #PeerTube

@vantablack
You can also use Invidious instead, that's another good option to avoid google's bullshit.
@vantablack
We have an instance if you wanna take a look
https://tube.raccoon.quest
Invidious

An alternative front-end to YouTube

@dushman @vantablack And the sponsor of today's Invidious promotion is AirVPN. Based VPN hosted in Italy, good privacy policy, nice prices, buy it with our referral link...
@maksim @vantablack
Hey it's a genuinely good service. The ddns and port forwarding support are great.
@dushman @vantablack not saying it's bad

I honestly like how you promote the things you like and host lol
@maksim @vantablack
I helps our upkeep costs. We already got a couple sign ups.
@maksim @vantablack
We host lots of stuff so our server has to be a bit beefy
@dushman @vantablack do you guys use this one from contabo? Or is raccoon's homelab also involved?

Personally I'm totally fine with that laptop running all the stuff I host (a lot). If only I had gigabit ethernet
🤤
@maksim @vantablack
two pi's and the contabo VPS lol
@dushman @vantablack yeah that costs something
@maksim @vantablack
and it costs me my time but I'm fine with that
@dushman @vantablack I thought you liked getting good hardware and ability to host lots of stuff with almost no limits
@dushman @vantablack not just "i'm fine with that" lol
@maksim @vantablack
Oh we will at some point migrate to a physical server at my place prolly cuz I got gigabit
@maksim @vantablack
Gonna buy a decommissioned EPYC rack most likely
@dushman @vantablack do they not have gigabit ethernet in Italy??? And what is the bandwidth with contabo?
@maksim @vantablack
between 200 Mbit/s and 1 Gbit/s depending on load for the VPS's
@maksim @vantablack
VDS gets guaranteed bandwidth
@maksim @vantablack
if you get one of the dedicated servers you will have guaranteed 1gbps that is optionally upgradable
@vantablack I always visit youtube in a temporary container without logging in and without any persistent cookie storage; did I accidentally defeat their ad-block-blocker before they even turned it on? I wondered why I haven't been seeing this

@vantablack i use firefox and ublock origin. i haven't had any problems, but this is definitely going into my notes for future reference lol so thx

probably a popular opinion on the fediverse, but i genuinely can't see youtube and other such corpos doing this sort of shit as anything but a violation. there's transphobic ads and fatphobic ads etc. which youtube probably could pretty easily help people with accounts avoid, but obviously doesn't. my experience is less accessible without adblock. i actually don't mind watching ads as a means to support people's art etc., but it's always just a bit of a gamble. seizing control from the people is fucked up.
