Tiny Privacy Tip đź”’:

Do not give your name to your devices.

Give them their own unique unrelated name. Like Steve or Martha or CyberApple or MyMagicTinyPocketComputer ✨

Giving it your own name isn’t really helpful in any way to you, and through Bluetooth or WiFi scanning can make your name known to strangers in the vicinity you might not want to share your name with.

Giving weird unrelated names to your phones, computers, WiFi network, etc, is not only safer, it is also much cuter  â€‹

@Em0nM4stodon My wifi is named “BLM” and “QAnons are Pedos” I live in a small apartment complex where there are 4 to 6 apartments per building. And last night when I went to use the bathroom I noticed there were a line of police officers parked behind my building. I had a momentary paranoia where I was worried if they would be able to figure out that the BLM Wi-Fi belongs to this apartment.

They can’t, can they?? I think they can tell it belongs to this building, but I’m hoping they can’t narrow it down to this apartment.

@maggiemaybe @Em0nM4stodon if they're really motivated, they can use a Wi-Fi scanner app and a bunch of walking around to figure out where the signal is strongest

How likely they are to bother to do that (or anything about it after they did) is a risk you'll have to evaluate for yourself
