Are you all so unsure of your sexual preference that you make a whole community over the believe someone could be 𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒅 gay?
@mayaisloading best to not click any sissy hypno links then!
@mayaisloading this is why I've never read a John Grisham book. What if I turned into a lawyer?
@joat I'm about to create a criminal gang with all the other true crime podcast listeners who become murderous overnight after hearing an interview with Ted Bundy.
@mayaisloading haha and as some Redditor pointed out, there are a whole bunch of children who never turned into a hungry caterpillar
@mayaisloading I think it's even crueller than that. They hope that there exists gay people, especially kids, who won't even *realise* that they're gay (or even that gayness is a thing) if only they can be kept from the truth for long enough. They actively *prefer* that people live their whole lives in shame, misery, loneliness and confusion than to ever get to know who they really are.
@dotcolm @mayaisloading This isn't a secret either- there's an entire conservative theology that essentially argues that yes, queerness is innate, but it's a "challenge from God" (i.e.: classified the same way they classify disabilities or the loss of a loved one)
@dotcolm @mayaisloading My partner reminded me that pedophilia is also lumped into that category

@dotcolm @mayaisloading This is entirely true, and exactly what my parents told me when I came out to them. Better to get married and be self hating than to be gay, even if I'm unhappy. It's more important (their words).

I think a reasonable portion of it is also that 'just one drop' mentality, and pretty much every person has been attracted to someone outside of their preferred specs at some point. Most of us shrug and say 'huh', some say 'well, maybe I'll change my looking for settings'.

@Oggie @mayaisloading That's heartbreaking; such a huge blow to the concept of unconditional parental love. I'm so sorry; I hope you found peace and happiness notwithstanding.

@dotcolm It happened. It's decades past, and I won't say it doesn't occasionally crop up in my interactions with them (it's certainly not something that 'goes away', especially when they never got around to saying they're sorry about what they said to their 20-something son), but honestly there are worse things.

We have a fairly civil interaction basis now.

@mayaisloading The dirty secret is that most people are to some degree bisexual. The right knows this because they see it within themselves and it scares the shit out of them. So they police the boundaries of straightness even harder.
@mayaisloading i listened to new wave music in the 1980s and I turned Japanese, I really think so
@mayaisloading it’s hard not to notice they’re the same people who basically say “if it wasn’t for the bible telling me it’s wrong, i would absolutely be doing all the mortal sins”
@mayaisloading When a conservative says "someone was turned gay", what they mean is "someone was persuaded to stop pretending to be straight".
They don't care what you feel. As long as you accept the role they want you to take, they're happy. If you don't, they're not. It's that simple.
