I grew up with books. From very early on my eyes were glued to the page, and I quickly noticed something very strange. In every case, the characters in these books so noticed the colours of other people's eyes.
What was going on here? I saw people all the time, and never once did I notice the colour of their eyes. I couldn't even have told you what my own mother's eyes looked like. Why were all of these authors pretending this was a thing?
That's how I eventually discovered there was a world of people out there making eye contact.
@dok I am really good at recognising and remembering actors' faces, but utterly terrible at recognising people in real life because I don't like looking at them.
@hey_juudes That must be really awkward. I'm fine with faces, and as I age and start to lose my hearing, it's becoming ever more necessary to look at people's mouths. With eyes though it's a sort of visceral embarrassment - is that what you get?
@dok Yes, I guess it is. Even if I'm 'looking' at them I'm not really actively looking. But I also get the hearing/lipreading thing too.
