Linux surpasses the Mac among Steam gamers

It's not the year of Linux on desktop; it's the year of Linux on a handheld.

@arstechnica I really can't say enough good things about my Steam deck. Even at its price point, it's one of the most happy-making tech purchases I've made in years.
@roadriverrail @arstechnica I like mine too, but I just find myself not playing it much anymore. Although that’s true for games in general too 😕
@roadriverrail @arstechnica it's so surprisingly practical, and makes it much easier to game companionably, hanging out while others are doing their projects and entertainments, wherever that may be.
@arstechnica Linux not only on handeld gaming systems, but mobile devices as a whole.
@arstechnica
My favorite computer that I own (at least until I get the framework 16") the SteamDeck is honestly amazing
@arstechnica Steam Deck and Framework 16" pre-order, and I'm just never buying another laptop lol this is gonna be a good year.
@arstechnica this is me until my Framework 16 arrives
@arstechnica macos, not "the mac". there is a difference between hardware/architecture and operating system. would you write "freebsd is surpassing the pc"? get it right.
@arstechnica i tried my coworker's steamdeck and it was too big for comfort for my girlhands 🥲
@komikymi While I love mine, the size of the handles really is an excellent example of brochitecture. 🤜🤛
@arstechnica People use Steam on Macs!?
@Tertle950 @arstechnica Steam is a horrible experience on a Mac
@arstechnica @mentallyalex I’ve been debating whether to get one. I’m… curious

@arstechnica while this is exciting news and a testament to Linux, Proton, Steam Deck, etc., I hope macOS doesn’t stay that way… I really hope the new Game Porting Toolkit results in more developers publishing on Mac.

… and/or supporting Vulkan or letting devs use their D3DMetal translation layer 🙃.

@arstechnica thanks to Valve, I'm using a steam deck as my "daily driver" desktop. I powered off my old MacOS machine 6 months ago. I need never buy another video card!! Ever!
@arstechnica Linux has been playing the long sleeper game.
@arstechnica I have been playing Dave the Diver, which has both a native M1 version and Steam Deck support. It runs better on the Steam Deck; it crashed today on the M1 while I was half an hour into a dive.
@arstechnica this is great and all but at the same time mac users have like 10 games to play

Given that Linux is the kernel of Android, I think we hit that milestone whatever year more Android handhelds were sold than iThings ; )

@strypey @arstechnica

Poisoned kinux is not linux. Android is a monkey, riding zombie linux in a red nose.
MacOs is a monkey, riding zombie linux, in a turtle neck.

@kevinrns @strypey @arstechnica LOL completely agree. Android is a monkey 🐒

@kevinrns
> Poisoned kinux is not linux

Linux is a kernel. What ships with Android, with minor modifications for hardware support, is Linux. It confuses matters that the desktop OS most people refer to as "Linux" is actually GNU with Linux as the kernel. It's a shame people haven't adopted the disambiguation tactic of talking about GNU/Linux and Android/Linux.

@arstechnica

@strypey @arstechnica

Yes. exactly as described, except my k in linux. fat fingered.

@strypey @arstechnica

Or just avoided them, like a plague.

@arstechnica The year of Linux on the desktop is 5 years away. Always was, always will be.
Also, the Mac is not a hand-held.
@arstechnica Ultimately it was the Steam Deck that got me into Linux desktop in the first place. All that tinkering to get games working taught me a lot

@arstechnica @siracusa The SteamDeck is an amazing product. Pulled off perfectly. Valve have done an amazing job and deserve all the credit and plaudits.

Without a doubt one of the best gadget I have bought in a long time.

@arstechnica Android thinking right now: Am I a joke to you?

@arstechnica I love Linux but it’s kinda « wrong » or missleading headline. 😅

It’s easy to beat Apple or any company in any sector, if this company isn’t really on the sector, imho.

Linux is indeed better than Apple in the console market. 😁
