Depends on the exceptions but that’s anti speech anyway, so not a fan at all unless has to be done.
Am for people individually blocking out content that doesn’t align with their values. Personal curation as opposed to mass censorship. Mass censorship opens up a whole can of worms that I personally find too distasteful for my liking. I don’t agree with the idea of a walled garden social media.

I find the banning of individual users to be highly necessary, to prevent spam of porn/nazi shit/general assholery. Instead of everyone having to spend a long time forming their own blocklist, they can sign up for an instance with a mod team that they trust to do it for them. Defederation is a useful tool towards that end, because (for example) Exploding Heads is an instance that explicitly allows racism and such, so a well-moderated instance will defederate with them rather than having to ban hundreds or thousands of individual trolls who sign up over there because they like racism.
As it you can block an entire community from your feed. I don’t trust the instance to do any of this on my behalf. This is where things get slippery and instead of just banning hate groups, they’ll eventually start banning political communities.
If you really take a look at this. Something like Twitter has done a great job of this such as mass filtering out undesired content by muting keywords.
I really think this is the way to go instead of allowing unappointed admins who are only answerable to themselves to be the judge of what is “good” speech.
You realize you could just get a personal instance running and federate with whoever you want, or leave to a different instance federated with who you want? That’s kind of the entire point of Lemmy’s federation system. There are so many other instances besides Lemmy.world to choose from, you should really look into others
Maybe I will end up giving up on lemmy.world and eventually self-hosting my own instance.
Yeah and it’s not like you have to give up all the content on lemmygrad.world either, I’m thinking of instance hopping myself too just because of all the problems with outages and connection issues, which will help reduce the strain on their servers too
You should try out WireMin bro, the ownership is entirely in individuals hand, at least thats how I feel so far. Like, no one can remove or ban you in a chat room and, no one can delete your post on your own feed space, if you create one.
But I do feel like it needs some kind of moderation, or their discovery(where you can find all active public feed or chat space) will be full of NSFW lol.
