I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as a gryphon, is in fact, bird/cat, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, bird plus cat. Gryphon is not a species unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning bird system made useful by the bird corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full creature as defined by The Ones Who Came Before Us.
Many #furries run a modified version of the bird system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of bird which is widely used today is often called “gryphon”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the bird system, developed by the bird genealogical tree.
The kernel is an essential part of a creature, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. cat is normally used in combination with the bird operating system: the whole system is basically bird with cat added, or bird/cat. All the so-called “gryphon” distributions are really distributions of bird/cat.
