Republicans want to plant a trillion trees. Scientists are skeptical.

New research finds that planting a trillion trees would have a minimal effect on halting global warming.

@gwagner trees are necessary but not sufficient!

@gwagner

They are only talking about the amount of carbon that trees can capture and that older trees are most efficient, so it'll take years. So it's a 'time' problem.

However, what they don't consider, is the huge difference in air temperature when land is forest vs farmed, especially harvested and bare. It's enormous, as any glider pilot, Montgolfier pilot can tell you.

Basically, we need both. Trees + leave the carbon in the ground.

@gwagner Yeah, but it probably doesn't hurt to have a little more living biomass on the planet...
@gwagner Ok but how about a *quadrillion* trees?
@gwagner @lisamelton let’s do the tree thing, but let’s also guillotine the elites and impose some sanity on the fossil fuel industry.
@gwagner
From my (very rough, back of the envelope) calculations, 13 billion trees have been destroyed during the 2023 wildfire season in Canada. So far.
@gwagner Hmm...eyeballing it, maybe 10 trillion trees would work? Maybe we just need to think bigger (of course reforestation will realistically just be part of the solution, but still!).

@gwagner there was (is?) an ongoing project between canada and china to reforest clearcut areas in china and it was, actually, making a measurable difference. it's not just decarbonization, there is temperature control, higher participation in carbon cycle, biomass, sandstorm reduction, habitat, etc

just google "canada china reforestation program" for this information

@gwagner

What MAKES A DIFFERENCE is ending the burning of carbon fuels, fossil fuels. OIL, COAL AND GAS.

Canada has 179 billion barrels of oil, 10 billion tons.

36 billion tons of CO2, and Canada is pushing it like a street hood with crack.

Promising to plant trees, is like a street hood also carrying band-aids.

CBCNews promotes the burning of oil. Billions of tons.
