If they're going to do this, they really ought to just deprecate the manual use of hashtags at all, and parse them out of the text directly with a word counting algorithm, and make them automatic.

Hash tags aren't magic; their just words preselected as search terms.

@paul Have to say not really happy about that. When you’re scanning emergency info it’s just one more thing to stop your eye. Do you think it’d make things easier on the Alt Text readers?

@paul Not a fan. Mastodon feeds will look far more cluttered. Hashtags don't need separate callouts; they're fine as-is at the bottom of a toot.
