i want my god damn fucking buttons back
where are the buttons
@anniethebruce @meidomatsuri I collect UK driving licences. Lorries, buses, motorbikes, what next?
In every case, keen (active) observation is vital to safety and the way I manage this is by muscle memory and feel. I know by feel exactly where the most important controls (everything from indicators/blinkers to demister fan in case of passing a damp field) are on my lorry or bus and I'm still watching forward, the passengers, and mirrors even as I use those controls. It's rare to have to look.
@anniethebruce @meidomatsuri That falls apart when some idiot puts all the controls onto a small rectangular panel of non-tactile switches all the same. They even look the same, until you decode the legend on the button. One button lowers the step for passengers with a walking frame, the button next to it shuts the doors on them as they are walking through.
Drivers always find ways to cope, but it shouldn't be a battle against tech finding new ways to create unnecessary hazards.
@meidomatsuri that new 8bitdo keyboard looks swank and comes with a pair of giant buttons: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/07/nes-nostalgia-at-your-fingertips-100-mechanical-keyboard-honors-80s-console/
I dunno what I’d use them for but I like ‘em
@meidomatsuri oh, you might like this. https://oldbytes.space/@thatKomputerKat/110814717387052052
Guy I follow on YouTube released a video on crappy modern tech a couple days ago and it made me laugh-fart. 😹 💨
I salute anyone who can see how stupid touch screens are for in-car stuff. We need more pushback on this trash.
Oh, Nakey Jakey posted a nice video about crappy #technology yesterday. Its hashtags are #smarttv and #infotainment among other juicy targets. https://youtu.be/cvDGqAtNzUc
@meidomatsuri Buttons makes hardware development more complex and expensive (touchscreen is one element from hardware POV). You can see it on synthesizers easily - the more buttons the more price goes up.
That being said I don't like that trend.
@meidomatsuri and hard off buttons/switches.
I want to be able to cut power instantly if needed.
@meidomatsuri Especially in cars. Touch-screen controls are fucking DANGEROUS because you have to LOOK AT THEM to use them. That takes your eyes off the road!
You can operate buttons, switches, and dials by TOUCH and muscle-memory without looking at them!
I enjoy buttons too, but they're a pain when its a vital button that gives out and renders your device inoperable.
For vehicles, that's not a big deal. Cellphones, however, don't normally offer replacements -__-
