modern tech fucking sucks why is everything touchscreen
i want my god damn fucking buttons back

where are the buttons
If y'all are still reacting to this you might as well follow me damn
@meidomatsuri buttons are so much more satisfying and functional.
@meidomatsuri It's especially bad in cars.

It seems like people are seeing "neat tech!" and using it everywhere whether it makes sense in that application or not.

@anniethebruce @meidomatsuri I collect UK driving licences. Lorries, buses, motorbikes, what next?

In every case, keen (active) observation is vital to safety and the way I manage this is by muscle memory and feel. I know by feel exactly where the most important controls (everything from indicators/blinkers to demister fan in case of passing a damp field) are on my lorry or bus and I'm still watching forward, the passengers, and mirrors even as I use those controls. It's rare to have to look.

@anniethebruce @meidomatsuri That falls apart when some idiot puts all the controls onto a small rectangular panel of non-tactile switches all the same. They even look the same, until you decode the legend on the button. One button lowers the step for passengers with a walking frame, the button next to it shuts the doors on them as they are walking through.

Drivers always find ways to cope, but it shouldn't be a battle against tech finding new ways to create unnecessary hazards.

@meidomatsuri At least give me on/off switches! Push-and-hold for power control is no way to live!
@meidomatsuri Especially in cars. I don't want a touchscreen. Give me the buttons, dials, and toggles I can tell by feel so I can keep my eyes on the road.
@meidomatsuri I am still salty about Apple killing the answer and hangup buttons on phones so I have to check the screen to see how to answer my phone every time.
@resuna @meidomatsuri their purpose was to make talk less and stare at screen (ads) more. your own opinions means nothing, go back to cage/wheel, hamster.
@meidomatsuri I got a dedicated video editing device thing and it’s entirely buttons and a knob and it’s my favorite piece of tech I’ve gotten in a whiiiiile

@meidomatsuri that new 8bitdo keyboard looks swank and comes with a pair of giant buttons: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/07/nes-nostalgia-at-your-fingertips-100-mechanical-keyboard-honors-80s-console/

I dunno what I’d use them for but I like ‘em

8BitDo’s $100 wireless mechanical keyboard screams ’80s NES

Retro colors and big ol' programmable "Super Buttons," but no numpad.

@meidomatsuri somehow with only touch screens they are pushing Your buttons right now /joking
@meidomatsuri the note 7 was top 10 best phone designs can we go back to that
@meidomatsuri I never want touchscreen in my car, ever.
@meidomatsuri the one exception being Android system navigation which is infinitely better as gestures imo but you have a point
@sataa @meidomatsuri I think it's worse, many android apps are made with buttons acting as the back button in mind and often dragging side menus isn't as easy because you end up going back
@Flux @meidomatsuri You do know you can just slide at an angle right?
@sataa still doesn't always work how I want it
@meidomatsuri i wan buttons too. lotsa buttons 100s of dem and just specialized screens 7segment displays c:::::::::::;;;;;;:::::::
@meidomatsuri Every year I have to explain to ixd undergrads that "radio buttons" are a physical interaction interface.

@meidomatsuri oh, you might like this. https://oldbytes.space/@thatKomputerKat/110814717387052052

Guy I follow on YouTube released a video on crappy modern tech a couple days ago and it made me laugh-fart. 😹 💨

I salute anyone who can see how stupid touch screens are for in-car stuff. We need more pushback on this trash.

Oh, Nakey Jakey posted a nice video about crappy #technology yesterday. Its hashtags are #smarttv and #infotainment among other juicy targets. https://youtu.be/cvDGqAtNzUc

@meidomatsuri Buttons makes hardware development more complex and expensive (touchscreen is one element from hardware POV). You can see it on synthesizers easily - the more buttons the more price goes up.

That being said I don't like that trend.

@meidomatsuri @patterfloof the buttons are in my cars. Seriously, only non-important functions in my cars are only accessible from the touch screen. Anything useful has a physical control as well. You can obviously tell my cars are a few years old...
@meidomatsuri "you should not use a cellphone while driving a car. Also, we replaced all the buttons and dials in the car with a gigantic cellphone display"
@meidomatsuri I've tried so hard to find a modern android phone with a physical keyboard. The latest company that made one ended up being a bit of a flop 🙃
@meidomatsuri I scream this to the heavens every day
@meidomatsuri I agree with you 100%!!! Especially in my car!!!

@meidomatsuri and hard off buttons/switches.

I want to be able to cut power instantly if needed.

@meidomatsuri same. bring back tactile buttons pls
@meidomatsuri Forever and ever, amen
@meidomatsuri ok hear me out, buttons that emerge from the screen
@moshibar gonna need an example of that because it sounds very cool

@meidomatsuri Especially in cars. Touch-screen controls are fucking DANGEROUS because you have to LOOK AT THEM to use them. That takes your eyes off the road!

You can operate buttons, switches, and dials by TOUCH and muscle-memory without looking at them!

@meidomatsuri I'd kill for a god dammed knob, Jesus.

I enjoy buttons too, but they're a pain when its a vital button that gives out and renders your device inoperable.

For vehicles, that's not a big deal. Cellphones, however, don't normally offer replacements -__-

@meidomatsuri It only makes sense on phones. Computers should be keyboard/mouse only (but drawing tablets for drawing or osu) and tablets should be banned completely.
@meidomatsuri you just want to press the buttons hehe🙃🙃
@meidomatsuri i want my fucking headphone jacks back. how the fuck are we supposed to record music without goddamn headphone jacks

@meidomatsuri I’d love to have a 10-key phone pad for eyes off texting again
@meidomatsuri Cookers are the worst. Touch screens that don't work once you've spilt some water and oil on them, typically labelled with incomprehensible icons in dark grey on dark grey (you shouldn't need to find a torch to turn up the heat under a saucepan!!), no two the same so that when you've learned how to use one you're no better off with the next one. Analogue knobs, please, FFS!
@meidomatsuri clicky buttons are so satisfying
