from “Don’t Call Us Dead” by Danez Smith (2017)

just this morning the sun laid a yellow not-palm
on my face & i woke knowing your hands

were once the only place in the world.
this very morning i woke up

& remembered unparticular Tuesdays
my head in your lap, scalp covered in grease

& your hands, your hands, those hands
my binary gods.
