I really struggle to read a "👍" reaction on WhatsApp or Slack as anything but a passive aggressive "yeah w/e"

@surma
pretty sure its universal confirmation for "seen that. all good. no further reply necessary at the time."

same as last reply in a dialog thread would be fav'ed

@surma Oh no I love to use the thumbsup as a reaction that I read and acknowledge a message

@surma I know *exactly* what you mean, and it's especially hurtful when my mother does it.

Joking aside, that's a cool insight. Although it would almost certainly be universally understood as "ok", it can give off a weird vibe. I think because it's coupled with that off-putting lack of natural feedback of an in-person conversation.

Pitch: app that uses phone and wearable sensors (private, only authorised contacts) to detect mood and convey it in realtime on the messaging UI, via emoji + color

@surma it's quite amusing because it's very much "all good" for americans, so on numerous times, I've had to jump on Slack and tell our designers that yep, the client is actually very happy with the work and no they are in fact not being passive aggressive 😅
