We've seen this movie before. As Imani Barbarin says, theyโ€™re going to โ€œherd immunityโ€ climate change.
@luckytran such a painfully apt analogy! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜ญ
@luckytran So infuriating. Even if this were possible (which it won't be in many times/places) -- how many times do people need to hear that the heat itself is not the only effect we need to be worried about?? How many droughts, floods, extreme storms, coastal inundations, etc., do people need to see?
@cepaea @luckytran Not to mention the air quality issues from the fires and particles trapped in heat domes.
@luckytran aka social darwinism aka survival of the fittest aka just mask off fascism
@luckytran Sure, humans can figure out how to survive a 1-3 C increase in temp. Crops canโ€™t.
@luckytran has "ghoulish" been used to describe this exercise yet?

@luckytran

I mean, if you can't take the heat, stay in the kitchen until you CAN or something....

@luckytran As in the memorable scene from Shrek, the prince standing on the balcony saying something like: โ€œSome of you will die, but that is a sacrifice Iโ€™m willing to make.โ€ The thinking seems to be that we (ordinary people) are expendable, and the rich and powerful will surely find a way to insulate themselves from whatever is coming. So yes, as you say: just as with Covid-19.
@luckytran i believe it was called mad max fury road
@luckytran The Washington Post is garbage

@luckytran

1.17 million Americans died from the covid disinformation campaigns funded by Republican billionaire donors.

How many billions will die because they thwarted climate action and condemned the planet to an uninhabitable fate?

โ€˜Project 2025โ€™: plan to dismantle US climate policy for next Republican president

Rightwing groups penned a conservative wish list of proposals for the next conservative president to gut environmental protections

The Guardian
@Npars01 @luckytran That's a global trend. In Argentina there is oil, lithium, copper, everything you can imagine needing in the next 100 years.
But people living in those territories have never seen any benefit from it. They have no water, no electricity, no job.
All he money is going to tax paradises and never come back.
Elected people sell lie after lie, they are never made accountable.

@luckytran

Who wrote the WaPo article?

@jonhendry @luckytran Allyson Chiu - https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solutions/2023/07/29/how-to-become-heat-tolerant/

Of course this is one of their free articles. Either that or my adblocker bypassed everything.

Your body can build up tolerance to heat. Hereโ€™s how.

Safely spending some time outdoors when itโ€™s sweltering out could help build up your tolerance to hotter conditions.

The Washington Post

@jonhendry @luckytran

Allyson Chiu and she needs to like yesterday write another fffking article titled "WaPo is bad, I am bad and should feel bad."

@luckytran I love how the utter horseshit came from WaPo both times.
@luckytran Washington Post: From exposing Watergate to this.
@luckytran There just needs to be a written rebuttal... Sadly, without the dough, it might be buried.
@luckytran Doesn't Jeff Bezos own WaPo?

@luckytran

Why don't they all #stop #voting, #go #home, pack their suitcases, and #wait for a #comet to pick them up. #Leave the rest to us.

#washingtonPost advocates #herdImmunity for #climateChange

@luckytran It's as much of a lie as the racist lies that used to be told (and probably still are) that skin tone accounted for the ability to feel pain.

@luckytran

this is some fcuk-it-and-throw-a-table shhhht French style right here

and NO people I am not CWing this, THEY WANT US TO DIE. THEM WANTING US TO DIE is more important than not doing a CW!!

@luckytran How do they know U.S. deaths near 100,000 if it's incalculable?
@luckytran so you can be worse than Dunning-Kruger

@luckytran

โ€œAsk not who the shithole countries are. Ask why your country is a shithole country.โ€

@luckytran Ultimately the solution was always gonna be โ€œfuck it.โ€ Itโ€™s what they always wanted.
@luckytran Climate solutions : doing nothing and hoping our body will adapt to heat
Except it's not temperatures risng the biggest issue, but what it implies (extreme weather events, droughts, famines, pandemies...)

@luckytran Not to be outdone, the BBC has a very similar article on the front page this morning...
https://www.bbc.com/news/health-66249805

It's kinda weird how this non news simultaneously appears on several major news outlets across the English speaking world, albeit with different content.

"But dealing with the heat is something we could all have to become used to dealing with. " Quite...
#climate #heat

Heatwave: How hot is too hot for the human body?

James Gallagher spends the day in the heat lab to see what summer heatwaves do to the body.

@luckytran
At least as we are dying of heat exhaustion we don't have to worry about masks.
@luckytran yes. Seen quite a bit of that nonsense over the last week or so.

@luckytran

Sarcasm is past its due date. Its is powerless and assumes defeat.

@luckytran Pfizer will have trouble marketing a cure for this one..
@luckytran The difference being that there are ways for an individual to protect themselves from a pathogen - global warming, not so much. There is no short-term solution for the heat - pretending that there is will only make matters worse. People need to be prepared for the worst *while* they are working towards climate solutions.
5 Movies that Screw the Theory of Evolution

Weโ€™ve all seen movies use loose conceptions of science to further a plot along, whether itโ€™s time-travel, radiation, or being able to clone dinosaurs and Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Evolutiโ€ฆ

Beyond simply dangerous, these ideas are simultaneously foolhardy and deeply cynical.
This is abhorrent.
@luckytran Washington post is pretty much on par with the Tabloid pages these days. Sadly the people who read it will eat that nonsense up...

@luckytran

If only the food we eat could adjust, too.

@luckytran Natural Immunity to COVID only lasts 2.5 months.

@bryy
More like only ~30 days with the most prevalent new variant now, according to the best data we have.

@luckytran

@luckytran
What doesn't kill us makes us stronger, right?

(Paging Dr. Hibbert.)

@luckytran - Just read that cactuses in Arizona can't take the heat. Why don't those cactuses take some personal responsibility for their lack of tolerance?

@luckytran

Well the truth is we who have time and resources to sit and chat on SM are mostly in the relatively wealthy countries that (1) cause most of the damage and (2) have more of the infrastructure necessary to cope and (3) don't have it as bad as folks who don't have #1 and #2 going for them. So (4) our biggest problem, in many people's eyes, is keeping "those people" where they suffer more with fewer resources than we who have caused most of the problems.
