Lobelia cardinalis, the cardinal flower, is native to much of north and central america. While the flowers are a beautiful example of Campanulaceae, my favorite feature of this plant are their shimmery, somewhat scabrid, leaves. Hard to demonstrate in a photo.
The flowers of L. cardinalis are zygomorphic, meaning they are bilaterally symmetrical on one plane. As red flowers often indicate in the Americas, they are pollinated by hummingbirds.
