Lobelia cardinalis, the cardinal flower, is native to much of north and central america. While the flowers are a beautiful example of Campanulaceae, my favorite feature of this plant are their shimmery, somewhat scabrid, leaves. Hard to demonstrate in a photo.

The flowers of L. cardinalis are zygomorphic, meaning they are bilaterally symmetrical on one plane. As red flowers often indicate in the Americas, they are pollinated by hummingbirds.

Campanula americana, the common bellflower, is a native to eastern north america. It likes mesic habitat and shade. It is an annual and will come back each year by seed. Pollinators LOVE it.
