β€œWhy are 100+ year old buildings classified as "Heritage" and illegal to tear down, yet it's legal for 100+ year old trees to be cut down every day?” #nature

😞
Any idea where this tree was cut?

@sco7sbhoy

This tree was far older than a hundred years.

@sco7sbhoy

Breaks my heart every time I see trees being chopped down. 😒

@sco7sbhoy .. Partly because the typical life expectancy of a tree isn't much longer. Where a tree has a particular value, they can, and are, given special protection... but of course, a building over one hundred years old generally doesn't automatically get protection any more than a tree but let's not worry about straw men
...
@sco7sbhoy That is a terrific question...It seems to me...It's all about the money...
@sco7sbhoy and after reading THE OVERSTORY (Richard Powers) I learned that old growth trees cannot be effectively replaced by new growth trees. The entire ecosystem, the network of old trees is forever damaged. It's like cutting out your heart and adding a bunch of blood vessels to "replace" it.
@sco7sbhoy It's not legal on federal property, only on private property, to cut down such a tree. We need to restrict it for private property too, if the tree is old enough.

@sco7sbhoy

We have to save all the trees, the forests, not just the pretty ones

Carbon fuels have raised the temperature, the interior of continents is growing drier.

International firefighters helping Canada, say the burn is into the roots because the soil is so dry.

They dont travel kilometers fighting fire, they travel meters, digging out burning roots.

19 Billion Trees have Burned This Year

We must transition OFF CARBON fuels, AT SPEED, or we wont make it.

Save The Forest

@sco7sbhoy @druid this makes me very sad 😞
@VacantInside @sco7sbhoy That's quite understandable Steve. I often think humans don't deserve to be on this planet.
@sco7sbhoy because those in power feel that it’s easier for everyone to just suffocate
