When it comes to the climate crisis I feel like we're in one of those stories where people need to build a boat to escape an island, but they don't even have the tools to build one. So they need to build the tools, to build the tools to build the tools to make a boat.

I see a lot of people saying "we need a boat."

Yes we totally need a boat - but which tools can we make right now that will get us there?

Joining an organisation, or just getting to know your neighbours is one of these basic tools. It won't get the boat built (it won't directly cause massive climate policy to be passed) but it's a way to start, and without it we will never get that boat.

BUT WE NEED A BOAT

Ok, so start cutting down trees, or weaving bullrushes

THAT'S NOT A BOAT

No, but it's a step there. No one else is coming to build the boat for us.

It's great that we know what we need - massive electrification and ending fossil fuels. So let's explore that, link by link and walk it back to how those things happen.

And how do the things that make *those things* happen?

And the things that make *those things*?

Until you get back to where you are. Because that's where you start.

@Loukas no boat big enough for 8 billion people. It’s a hard rain, gonna fall…

@Loukas

We have a boat - it is us, We, the People.

When it comes to the #ClimateEmergency - It is not hopeless & we, the people are not helpless! If we take individual action now - without asking anyone! https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/jul/28/climate-crisis-emergency-rebecca-solnit-terry-tempest-williams

IMO, it’s up to us – WE,THE PEOPLE, to save planet Earth by becoming #EcoConciousConsumers https://www.thinkhousehq.com/features/climate-conscious-consumerism-what-is-it-and-how-do-we-do-it who actively mitigate global warming by our daily choices of: who we donate to, vote for, invest/divest/bank in; what we buy, eat, drive/pedal; to switch from gas to electric; to reduce, reuse, recycle; & consume less. https://news.climate.columbia.edu/2018/12/27/35-ways-reduce-carbon-footprint/

In the film: “Wake Up, Freak Out – then Get a Grip” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnyLIRCPajM tells us that “preventing run-away Global Warming is the single most important task in all of human history - and it is up to us to do it. If we don’t then everything else we have achieved in our lives will become meaningless”!

The United nation says: “Everyone can help limit climate change. From the way we travel, to the electricity we use, the food we eat, and the things we buy, we can make a difference.” https://www.un.org/en/actnow/ten-actions

Greta Thunberg says - “Politicians are not coming to the rescue of planet Earth” https://www.newstatesman.com/environment/2022/10/greta-thunberg-guest-edit-politicians-rescue-planet & “Saving the world is voluntary…we need billions of #climate activists” https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/oct/08/greta-thunberg-climate-delusion-greenwashed-out-of-our-senses

Robert Reich @rbreich Says “A handful of billionaires now have unprecedented control over banking, the food we eat, the health care we can access and, now, the information we receive…” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_sjfchNsiM&t=15s But, these Oligarchs got rich by convincing us to buy products that we don’t actually need & that are harmful to our planet. So, stop buying those products!

William Stanley Jevons said: “Value is created by the consumer, not the producer… the consumer is the ‘ultimate regulator of demand’” - https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/11/how-humans-became-consumers/508700/ So people - stop demanding!

DR. SAILESH RAO position paper https://climatehealers.org/the-science/animal-agriculture-position-paper/ says: “...animal agriculture is the leading cause of climate change, responsible for at least 87% of annual GHGs.”

Imagine the effect on Global Warming if just 50% of us decided to #EatPlantbased or #EatVegan or #EATLancet! https://www.greenqueen.com.hk/plant-based-diets-slash-carbon-emissions/

Humanity can’t equivocate any longer. This is a climate emergency

The climate emergency has been declared over and over. The future the scientists warned us about is here, now

@Loukas @Brendanjones how can it be like a boat if there's nowhere to sail to?

it's more like living in a giant garden & everything you eat & breathe can only come from the garden. so you better figure out how to live in balance with the garden.

@mk30 @Brendanjones I don't care whether you like my metaphor or not, just that you understand that you need to start the work asap
@Loukas @Brendanjones starting work on the wrong metaphor is not helpful. building a boat is not the same as managing an ecosystem. because ecosystems are not built, they are grown. the design process is completely different. so if you give people the idea that they're on a boat project when they're actually on an ecosystem project, that will shape what they think the job is. maybe you want to save civilization, so that's the boat you mean?
