I have never understood why the vast majority of people, even (or especially?) tech-savvy ones, have no problems with relying on Gmail for their personal mail at all
To clarify: This does not really apply if you use your own custom domain name

@Bkolb yes, as you could move without too much of a hassle
@stilkov the way I did that in the past was just to forward mails automatically. If that is your concern that would also work - after all you still have the email address. I thought your concern would be the data, but here a custom domain does not help.
