I can't get over the story of the Texas professor suspended for criticizing the Lt.Governor. This is how fu**ed up this is:

The conservative student should have known better; her conservative mother should have known better; the Lt.Gov should have known better; the Lt.Gov's staff should have known better; and the University should have known better.
Any ONE of them should have shut down the complaint and stood up for free speech. But every one of them went full fascist.

Texas A&M suspends professor accused of criticizing Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick in lecture

The professor, an expert on the opioids crisis, was placed on paid administrative leave and investigated, raising questions about the extent of political interference in higher education, particularly in health-related matters.

@petergleick

The Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick is such a gem.

“Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who is presiding over the impeachment trial of suspended Attorney General Ken Paxton, received $3 million in campaign support last month from a top group campaigning against Paxton’s impeachment.”

Pro-Paxton group gives $3 million to impeachment trial judge Dan Patrick

Defend Texas Liberty was the lieutenant governor’s largest benefactor in late June, providing a $1 million donation and $2 million loan to his campaign.

@petergleick @KitRedgrave conservatives when told off by a private company: but my first amendment rights!!!
conservatives when someone says something they don't like: I will violate your first amendment rights to censor you

fucked up and same as it ever was

@petergleick really shows that they don't ACTUALLY care about free speech, that they just wanna be shitty
@petergleick Here’s the Texas A and M Faculty Senate response!

@CarrieinFbx @petergleick

Makes it hard to recruit and retain the best and the brightest.

Like the politicians actually care about that. Hah!

They'd probably prefer the worst and the dullest. Because they don't give a rat's ass about education.

@petergleick as a protest every other professor in Texas should make a point of criticizing the Lt governor all the time..
@petergleick Texas is a horrible state. Abbott is a sociopath. Right wing Christian fundamentalists are trying to impose their will. Florida with DeSantis is equally bad. Book bans, civil rights denied, it's all happening at the most critical time in human history as climate change requires us to come together, if we are to survive. The ignorance is breathtaking.

@petergleick
This is absolutely outrageous.
@petergleick My alma mater continues to be a national embarrassment. (exasperated sigh)

@petergleick

Lt Gov Dan Patrick advocated for "Letting Granny Die to Save the Economy" during the height of the pandemic.

What's more Nazi than killing the old?

Republican politicians do nothing but donor maintenance.

Over 1.17 million Americans died because of GOP disinformation and Republican billionaire greed.

@petergleick

"All of the students interviewed said they felt Alonzo’s comments were accurate and they were not offended by anything in the presentation."

I'm other words, she told the truth, and the truth was critical of the lieutenant governor's office.

Can't have that. When it comes to truth or politician's happiness, apparently the politician takes preference.

Fuck that shit.

@petergleick I’m not going to hold my breath waiting for FIRE to come to her defense.
@petergleick The problem with the idea that each state is its own little country is that a lot of these states are little Nazi Germanys

@petergleick

The paradox of tolerance states that if a society is tolerant without limit, its ability to be tolerant is eventually ceased or destroyed by the intolerant.

Karl Popper described it as the seemingly self-contradictory idea that in order to maintain a tolerant society, the society must retain the right to be intolerant of intolerance.

@petergleick why is everything shitty like this?
