Enjoying some #rugelach
@raf Is rugelah the same as Babka? Duolingo Yiddish is forever rattling on about Babka. I've only ever had rugelah. I've never knowingly seen this thing called babka, but the description seems to be sort of the same.

@terryb

Different foods! Babka is more of a bread or cake loaf, while rugelach is more of a pastry or cookie

@raf Oh! What our (UK)kosher bakeries sell is definitely cake like. A yeast cake sort of stuff. Which is what your picture looks like. I'm even more confused. And I don't think I've ever seen a babka sold. I'm wondering if it's more of an American Jewish stuff.

@terryb

I think yeasty cake is the norm for babka. For rugelach there is a yeasty variant and a shortbread one. The shortbread one is more common in North America. I actually posted an excerpt from a cookbook talking about this

Attached: 1 image I got a new cookbook! The recipe for rugelach includes a passage where the author was admonished by her customers for not making them right!

@raf The American cheese based rugelach isn't sold (under that name) in our bakers. They're all big, parve, yeast cakes. (Sometimes small ones like yours, but still the same texture). And tellingly there isn't anything on the shelf called Babka. So I guess we get the Israeli version. Next time I'm in Golders Green I might check some of the smaller bakers that the Chassids use. If there are any left. I have a suspicion the smaller bakers may all have closed/moved away.
