Do y’all remember Computer Engineer Barbie, the world’s worst computer engineer? Starring in the world’s most sexist children’s book? With all the discussion about Barbie, I realized it’s been almost a decade since that controversy blew up and I went viral for this feminist remix. (“Now with less sexism!”) https://caseyfiesler.com/2014/11/18/barbie-remixed-i-really-can-be-a-computer-engineer/
Barbie, Remixed: I (really!) can be a computer engineer.

I am a PhD student in a computing department, so I guess it’s not surprising that my social media feeds have been full of outrage over Barbie’s “computer engineering” skills…

@cfiesler
it is funny how times change. In 1972 when I was a senior in high school, I was interested in programming. My dad, who worked at a national lab, discouraged me because he felt programming was "women's work" (think Hidden Figures).
@cfiesler WOW!! I love this!!! This is the Barbie movie we need.
@cfiesler I wish I could get a physical copy of this for my daughter. Thank you, this is amazing.
@cfiesler I was recently thinking about computer engineer Barbie!

@cfiesler ok though I now legit want a girls’ night programming sleepover

(Which is weird, because the requirement of staying up all night programming deeply dissuaded me from majoring in CS)

@cfiesler see I would have guessed Barbie to be more of a CRISPR biohacker

@cfiesler there was also a set produced in 50/60s for Barbie sized dolls.

"Barbie can be mainframe operator" was the first name which came to my mind when I saw it.
