Sad to see cars winning by-election in Uxbridge: "Steve Tuckwell, the local Conservative councillor who will now take Johnson’s place in Westminster, had declared the vote a “referendum” on London’s ultra-low emission zone (Ulez)" #airpollutionkills https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/jul/21/uk-byelection-results-labour-tories-selby-ainsty-uxbridge?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other
UK byelection results: Labour routs Tories in Selby and Ainsty but falls short in Uxbridge

Keir Mather, 25, is Selby’s next MP, as Labour narrowly fails to take Boris Johnson’s old seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip and Lib Dems romp to victory in Somerton and Frome

@SusiArnott It is depressing that reactive, short-term thinking took the side of the Rights of the Car. Labour's role was to defend the policy of ULEZ expansion strongly, against nasty and organised disinformation; they should not be preparing now to spread any doubt on this policy or any other serious environmental measures that need to be taken.
@SusiArnott and I forgot to say -- how nice to clap eyes on a fellow mastodonian in the actual Real Life last night!
@SusiArnott We choose with our guts, not our brains. And the results are often shit.
But the fact that Labour, the Lib Dems and Greens couldn't agree to work together shows that politicians can seldom see past the ends of their noses.
@sellathechemist @SusiArnott
the Labour candidate didn't support clean air - why would a Green voter vote for that? And there were more Green voters than the difference between Tory & Lab.
