So I’m getting fired from Roam Research (which is fine) while being owed $70K in compensation (not fine). Some of it goes as far back as 2021!

I guess rumors are true, don’t work there, don’t trust them to keep their word, or take 100% payment up front.

Re: legal actions etc.

Technically I got everything I’m owed due to contract, so no shot here. Extra $70K were only promised in email.

And now CEO says “I’m delusional to think it was ever in the picture”, in answer to the literal picture of an email _from him_.

Re: why dragging this to public? Because I don’t want the same to happen to anybody else. I don’t like doing it, I stress about it as fuck, I prefer—and tried, multiple times—to solve it quietly. This is the very, very last resort.
It’s 2023, US and Europe are the centers of civilized world, and nobody should be fighting for the money they were promised in plain English. It’s not even I thought/he thought situation! It’s all in writing! I’ve had enough of that bullshit in early 2000-s in Russia.
Re: next gig. I have some savings, so I’m going full open-source for the rest of the year, @borkdude -style. We’ll see how it goes from there. Initially I planned to use that money for 2+ years OSS sabbatical, but I guess it’ll have to be shorter now.

@nikitonsky oh wow. it sucks. good luck with your OSS journey!
@nikitonsky I’m sorry to hear that, Niki. Sucks when relationships go this way. I hope you’re holding up okay.
@jcf thanks! yeah, I’m fine though, feeling some sort of relief actually, and looking forward for what’s to come

@nikitonsky I've had that same sense of relief when escaping a stressful situation. You feel a palpable weight lifted, and suddenly, possibilities present themselves.

It's a shame we never got to work together. I've been a fan of your no-nonsense approach to building awesome shit for a long time.

If I’m ever hiring at a startup cutting Clojure, you'll be top of my list of collaborators, Niki!

@nikitonsky I know that happened in Canada, but still https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/07/business/farmer-contract-thumbs-up-emoji/index.html - I'd absolutely ask around OSS community for any lawyers interested in picking up the case.
@nikitonsky That really sucks. Take care and some rest!
@nikitonsky so sorry to hear that, if it is any consolation the one time I had an interaction with them they came off as very unprofessional. Hope you get what you are owed!
@wfleming Thanks! Yeah it seems it’s a tradition here. People just bounce off them
