The ongoing heatwave in Europe and the U.S. will further intensify this week. Parts of Italy, Spain and Greece may see temps soar to 48°C.

Here is a map of temperatures in Europe yesterday and a similar one from a year ago. Pink represents 34°C and above. The U.K is cooler this year, while the Mediterranean nations are searing. Spain cannot catch a break.

Last week, the heatwave was caused by the anticyclone out of Africa named Cerberus. This week it is Charon.

In Greek mythology, Cerberus was the three-headed beast that guarded the entrance to Hades and kept the living from entering the world of the dead.

Charon is a psychopomp, the ferryman of Hades. He carries the souls of those who have been given funeral rites across the rivers Acheron and Styx.

Quite apt names for phenomenon caused by fossil fueled climate change.

The names Cerebrus and Charon are not official and are chosen by Italian weather website iLMeteo. But they do seem quite apt for the inferno caused by climate change, which will only get worse and they grab the attention of millions and bring awareness of the science of climate change caused by fossil fuels and greenhouses gases.

Why Is Europe’s Latest Heat Wave Called Cerberus? It’s Complicated

Cerberus, an unofficial name for the current European heat wave, has gone viral—but some meteorologists find it sensationalistic and worry it won't help people take extreme weather seriously.

Here is a graphic illustrating heat domes.

Hot air masses, born from the hot summer sun, expand vertically into the atmosphere, creating a dome of high pressure that compresses and heats air below it and dissipates cloud cover.

Amid drought conditions things get worse. With very little moisture in soils, heat energy that would normally cause evaporation and cooling of the ground, instead directly heats the ground and the air above it.

How heat domes cause heat waves and high temperatures in the U.S.

Heat domes are a staple of summertime and the source of most heat waves, which cause extreme heat and high temperatures. Here’s a look at how heat domes work.
