"The Boys of Summer" by DON HENLEY

Don Henley's "The Boys of Summer" is a song for what summer leaves behind. The song itself is one Tom Petty left behind.

The Best Song Ever (This Week)

@codinghorror A cover that improves on the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QW7WS-O2hjA

(Other good covers by Au Revoir Simone, and Daddy Issues, but not on the tubes in acceptable quality.)

@jwz @codinghorror +1 for the Daddy Issues cover, in fact the entire album that’s on is great

@jwz @codinghorror

Really interesting, thanks for linking that one.

I am fond of the more conventional cover by the Ataris ("I saw a Black Flag sticker on a Cadillac") and the more recent one by American Football was pretty good too.

@CliftonR @jwz @codinghorror I always preferred the Bree Sharp cover, personally

You're right, I didn't know this one but it's a damn good version. I'll have to give a listen to more of her music.

OK, I *swear* I listened to an American Football cover of 'Boys of Summer' on Youtube a few months ago, but now I can't find it.

Their copy of Mazzie Star's 'Fade Into You' is fairly nice, though it loses the dreaminess of the original.

(Realizing now that 'American Football' was not a good choice of band name for search engine visibility, though I doubt anybody will ever top The The for that.)

Stop Me If You Think You've Seen This Word Before

If you've ever searched for anything, you've probably run into stop words [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_words]. Stop words are words so common they are typically ignored for search purposes. That is, if you type in a stop word as one of your search terms, the search engine

Oh yeah, I remember reading that post on your blog many eons ago.

They're also a well-known test case and boundary case in library science as I recall, because of the standard rules about stripping articles in indexing.

The The The* album cover you picked is one of the The The* albums I bought both on LP and CD, as well as of course ripping it to MP3 long since. 'This Is the Day' has many years of complicated associations for me.

* Yes of course that's on purpose

@scm @CliftonR @codinghorror Back when Witch House was still a thing, lots of those bands had names that were made of zalgo-esque unicrud.

@scm @jwz @codinghorror

Nice. I see Mastodon's URL identification & extraction broke on that one.

@CliftonR @jwz @codinghorror it might have been Ivory’s fault, but that’s part of the fun!

Tbf they have to deal with the situation where someone says something like “look at hxxps://example.com! It’s great!”

@CliftonR @jwz @codinghorror I occasionally listen to Nothing (bad for talking about irl) and・・・・・・・・・ (they break search engines)
@CliftonR @jwz @codinghorror she was only ever famous for her David Duchovny song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wijp4-3giNw) but I think she's a great songwriter, lots of fun stuff on her albums

@jwz @codinghorror Damn, that really slaps. Adding it to the Noctura or 5FDP covers of _Gone Away_ or the Disturbed cover of _Sound of Silence_.
@jwz oh fantastic, I love covers that completely transform the song, e.g. https://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/rewinding-jimi-hendrixs-national-anthem
