Accidental Tech Podcast: 544: Valid in a Marco Way

Three nerds discussing tech, Apple, programming, and loosely related matters.

@atpfm Listening now. I will say everyone poops on the id.4 but it is the best car I’ve ever owned. I‘ve never owned a fancy bmw but the experience of driving the id.4 is way better than it’s on-paper specs would lead you to believe.
@njpozner @atpfm I tried all the cars in the price range of the ID.4 before choosing it and have no regrets. I’ve had it for over a year, have done a couple of 1000 mile road trips, and aside from a couple of very minor quibbles it has been fantastic.
@njpozner As discussed on past episodes, everyone loves their first EV, no matter what it is.
@siracusa of course. The id.4 isn’t significantly worse than the EV6 or Ioniq5. It’s not like it’s a Mazda MX-30, which is a garbage EV. 😆
@njpozner I don’t think I’ve read any review or comparison that has said the ID.4 is as good as the Ioniq 5 or EV6.
@siracusa i test drive them all and chose the id.4. There are some things that are better and worse about each of them. I do think I the things that the reviewers typically ding id.4 on are overblown. But I admit I am probably biased having already made my decision. 😀
@siracusa @njpozner I think what the “best” car is at a given price point is very subjective - more so than with a laptop etc. I fully expected to get an Ioniq 5 when I started (loved the looks and the reviews were great) but, unexpectedly, ended up with the ID.4. The Ioniq 5 definitely beats it in some areas, but overall I preferred the VW and found the main complaints with the infotainment system have been completely overblown. Go test drive them all!
@ieeur @siracusa @njpozner I had the same experience. My ID.4 is my second EV, and I love it. I also cross shopped the Ioniq 5, but went with the ID.4

@gabrieldj @ieeur @siracusa @njpozner I for one went with the Ioniq 5 here in Germany while having an ID3 already but that was mainly to power with dual motors, price and tow capacity. Haven't regretted the choice yet and the charging of the Ioniq 5 is crazy fast.

BUT in terms of driving the ID4 is the way more sporty and engaging car. The Ioniq 5 is way more comfort in terms of suspension. I'd own an ID4 gladly and the frunk really doesn't matter at all. Have opened the one on the Ioniq once..

@siracusa @njpozner Agree. Pick up my first EV last September (Niro EV) and can confirm I really love it.
@atpfm @caseyliss Listening to this makes me never want to develop any software for Apple platforms. What a clusterfuck.
@atpfm @caseyliss @marcoarment This reminds me of @stroughtonsmith's work to use Midjourney to generate album covers for Broadcasts.
@atpfm @marcoarment @caseyliss What’s going on with the schedule? New episode on a Sunday!?

@atpfm @caseyliss * agree w Marco re verification & think John's answer was a bit out of character. Ultimately, one has to trust some 3rd party to vouch that so & so is who they say. Trustless tech doesn't solve this. Would really like to see something like an independent nonprofit webservice w that task.

* Post wasn't and isn't dead. It's had zero uptake by tech nerdery but it's alive and has a good, non-bad business model. It won't be new Twitter, but I think there's a chance it survives.

@atpfm @caseyliss One other thing I’ve learned they check on screenshots: iPad pictures can’t show iPhone frames. But if you don’t have actual iPad screenshots at hand, just put cropped iPhone screenshots inside an iPad frame and they won’t notice.
@atpfm @caseyliss the environmentally best choice is reducing the number of cars through public transit, bike infrastructure, and walkable cities. Car-centricity will kill us all.
@brandononearth Yes but in a country as large as the US that ain’t easy.
@caseyliss the US had an extensive continental rail network and streetcars in even mid-size cities. We dismantled it to focus spending on the highway system and car infrastructure. We need to prioritize it again, like Western Europe and China have.
@atpfm @caseyliss I'd love to partake but sadly I don't have 2 1/2 hours :(
@atpfm @caseyliss Great episode! With sealed volumes post Big Sur I wonder if @siracusa still wrangles bootable clone backups as part of his strategy. Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper! can still help. But the good old days of just booting off the cloned drive after a failure to load a bare drive seem gone. Thoughts?
@bfdun SuperDuper makes bootable backups.
@atpfm @caseyliss late to the party but I couldn’t stop thinking to replace the movie posters with ones that are now public domain, such as “Gone with the Wind” or something. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_in_the_public_domain_in_the_United_States?wprov=sfti1

@atpfm @caseyliss Hyundai has released the Ioniq 5 N brother of the EV6 GT with more power und a stupid gearbox simulator 🙄

But the 640hp and 770nm speaks for itself... Charging time still 20min with 800v

@atpfm @caseyliss @siracusa @marcoarment ICE car owners complaining that electric cars wear out the roads because they’re heavy… while they have an unnecessarily oversized SUV parked in their driveway.
Tesla Model Y performance vs. BMW X5 40i
@atpfm l haven’t made it through the episode yet but wanted to plug this Time Machine Docker container: https://github.com/mbentley/docker-timemachine
I have it running on my Synology 🛎️ and it’s heaps better than the built in Time Machine support. No issues at all since I got it up and running.

@atpfm @caseyliss @marcoarment @siracusa I am 100% with Casey on the AirPods Pro 2 are way better than the first generation. Starting in March I had to travel from New York to California on flights. I was thankful to have my pros and the noise cancelling and my for my third trip my wife had purchased the 2nd gens for me and holy cow the flights were so much better and quieter. The sound quality playing music is twice as good.
@atpfm @caseyliss What are the odds that I’m listening to this episode on my way to Marco Way 😂
@atpfm @marcoarment Does the Unifi Dream Router now fully support gigabit internet? I recall it being limited to around 800Mbps or so.
@atpfm not to tempt @caseyliss but you can definitely find the EV6 GT below MSRP; then also get either cash back from Kia or a $7500 lease credit (then buy out the lease)…
@atpfm @marcoarment To be clear, New Hampshire is the south of the north. 😁 (Oh, and congrats!)
@atpfm did I hear correctly, @siracusa doesn’t have a local copy of his email? how is it backed up then?
@andymandias I have multiple local copies: annual Gmail archives plus local Apple Mail.
@atpfm @marcoarment I have had the Unifi Dream Router since it was in beta. It is woefully underpowered and cannot support a full Gbit connection. It maxes out around 750 MBit. The Pro can do it but is more $$. I went @caseyliss style and installed pfSense on a 2011 Mac Mini. It works great with my Unifi APs and gives me full synchronous Gbit. For connections of 500 Mbit or less it's brilliant!
@atpfm I love how when it comes to European names it’s “sorry I’m gonna butcher it” but when it comes to Amazon brand name then it’s “a bunch of consonant”
