There are two wolves inside of you. One wants your OS to have an ultra-slick futuristic aesthetic. The other one wants your OS to look like Windows 95

@paintedsky

The wolf that just wants a vt100 command line is always forgotten.

@paintedsky The compromise: your OS uses the Watercolour theme
@paintedsky Sadly am old enough where W95 *was* that ultra-slick futuristic aesthetic. 😢
@paintedsky But what if I want my OS to look like Hotdog Stand?
@paintedsky But Windows 95 + Internet Explorer 4 was peak Desktop.
@danmarce truly the most active of desktops
@paintedsky these two things are the same thing
@paintedsky *cough* Anything running CDE *cough* 🙃
@paintedsky I feel attacked on a personal level.
@paintedsky I guess the Lisp alien repurposed their biomass, woops.
@paintedsky theres one wolf in me and it wants my os to look like osx snow leopard
@paintedsky I would settle for a UI that worked as well as MacOS 7. There are features in the original Macintosh OS that are still superior to any OSes on the market, today. Apple spent many millions of dollars on UI research in the early 1980s, only to abandon it with the move to Mac OS X.
@gcvsa @paintedsky I only used older MacOS veeeeery briefly. Any good examples of things it did better? Just curious!
@SonnyBonds @paintedsky One thing that immediately comes to mind is how MacOS handled traversing nested drop-down menus. You could mouse diagonally over the space that was outside the menu without the menu closing. Many other systems still do not do this.
@paintedsky I kinda want a hybrid of the two, the best of both worlds

@felixbernoully @paintedsky @lisamelton I’ve lately had some real nostalgia for the platinum look too. I feel like it aged well for me. :)
@paintedsky Using Windows, both my wolves are equally happy.
@paintedsky i want mine to look so weird and custom that it looks like a custom built feverdream which is clear that it could look beautiful and polished but i didnt even bother to set a wallpaper

@paintedsky One of my wolves wants my desktop to look like Toybox.

Those were the days. All of my shortcuts had hand-designed icons.

@paintedsky I have sated both wolves by doing this to my iPhone 14

@paintedsky

I'm in my 40s. #Windows 95 *is* the ultra-slick futuristic aesthetic. Get off my lawn!
