Really fun watching a generation of "content creators" learn what a scab is.
"I can't be a scab because I'm not in the union," says a 20-something with 3M followers, not knowing that's EXACTLY WHAT A SCAB IS.
I've never been in a union. But my dad and his dad were when they worked in a steel factory. The people who sacrificed to create and maintain that union helped my family build a life in this country when we were poor war refugees, and me and my sister were the beneficiaries of that when grandpa Powazek helped us pay for college years later. Unions change lives for generations. That's why I support the strikes. #solidarity
@fraying Union membership has been on the decline for decades. The 20somethings probably don't have any idea what it means to have a union at your back, or why it's bad to scab. Not that it excuses their actions, but labor history is probably not a part of a post-No Child Left Behind curriculum
@fraying my father was President of Michigan Federation of Teachers for 20 years. I also support unions.
@fraying A lot of (not enough) librarians are in unions. I was in AFSCME at my first real library job in Vermont. It's sometimes a hard sell for younger employees (takes some of your money, you're unclear on the benefits) but our janitor/maintenance guy was also the shop steward and told us horror stories about when the director, the current director, tried to take people's health insurance away and they stopped her from doing it. It's important to share stories. #solidarity
