The Biden administration just forgave $39 billion in student debt for more than 800,000 borrowers who have made payments for 20/25 years

Great.

Now can we talk about why 800K people were tricked to rack up $39 BILLION in debt when they were kids?

Why we allow them to be tricked by the promise that maybe, kinda, possibly, one day it’ll pay off?

Or why there are people who have been paying their student debt for 20+ years?

Or why college isn’t free?

@flexghost Because they screwed up the bankruptcy law when they made student loans the only unsecured debt besides child support that you can't discharge in bankruptcy.

No one would have made those loans at those interest rates because people would discharge them in bankruptcy the 1st time they got in financial trouble.

It needs to be fixed. Forgiveness is a bandaid.

@flexghost Every person with a brain would want college to be free... You know who wouldn't? Yeah, you guessed it. A republican wouldn't!

And what's up the "What about those that didn't take out loans, to better themselves" notion? Hey, I know a handful of people who didn't go to college, because they couldn't afford it... And yet, if you ask them, they'll tell you how important it is to get an education... The bitter, and sour republican wouldn't though...

@customer228

We are being held up by regressives sure. But it’s the moderate “liberal” mine mommy and Oakley wearing dad who hides neoliberal beliefs. “Bootstraps” when everything was handed to them.

Even if they paid for college, as I did: so what. Help others even if they have a different experience than you

This country rewards stepping on others and pretending your an individual when you’re really being an individual like everyone else

@flexghost I totally agree, Flexghost!

Just because something doesn’t benefit me, doesn’t mean I should bash it… I wish all these cuckoo republicans understood that we should always do better…for others. The typical republican has the “me, me” attitude… Talk about being selfish…

@flexghost my mother is 84 years old. She got her masters at 42. She is still paying student loan debt.
@flexghost Thank you for bringing this topic up. I watch a streamer who's drowning in student loan debt. He's been paying it off for 12 years, and he has many years left to pay it off. What's worse is that he can't have it forgiven since they are private loans.

@Ertain can’t be discharged even in bankruptcy. Evil.

And even the wine mommy “liberals” are complaining “I paid mine you have to pay yours.” First: no they didn’t. Daddy did. Second: who cares? I paid mine and it has nothing do to with lifting everyone up as a whole.

❤️

@flexghost @Ertain A huge PR problem for the debt forgiveness side is that most people aren’t aware how predatory the system is now. I had a long talk with an Oakley dad the other day and couldn’t get him off of the ‘I paid mine back and always read all the fine print’ argument. Dude, that was in the 80s. It’s a different ball game now
You're right, @curtisysmith Those credit card and loan companies became really predatory over the past 20 years. They should have been regulated years ago. Looks like someone didn't want the public at large to know this.

@flexghost

the quandary is that they get smarter after college

@flexghost the predatory student loan program must be destroyed. There is no excuse for the richest nation in the world ever, to have anyone go into crippling debt for a decent education.
There is no excuse for kids going to school hungry in the United States.
There is no excuse for anyone in the US to be denied healthcare.
There is no excuse for homelessness in the US.
Why does everything have to be done for profit in the US? Why can’t we just do things because it’s the right thing to do?
@flexghost student loans are one of the worst scams out there and people act like it's just normal
@flexghost the last question strikes me as the singularly most urgent. K-PhD should be public school. Universally Free to anyone who can pull a “C” average
@flexghost education must be free.
@flexghost The GOP resists education in general - and especially free - because ignorance is what keeps their cult following alive.
@flexghost yes, yes, yes, and yes.
@flexghost You only have to look at the Republican Party to find out why Americans can’t have nice things like, a free college education, health care, free from mass shootings, a living wage and on and on!! But, the ignorant masses seem to enjoy the 1% having the wealth and power!!
@flexghost This has been my argument in this issue. Forgiving the debt is patching the problem; the real fix is making college free or at least regulating the costs.
@flexghost time normalizes everything, even things that are inherently stupid and unfair
