Fucking Christ the @protocol is the most obtuse crock of shit I've ever looked at. It is complex solely for the sake of being complex and still suffers from *all* of the same problems as Mastodon. Your server goes down? Sorry, all of your followers are lost. Account portability is no better than Mastodon. 'DIDs' serve literally no purpose. And none of the API code that Bluesky uses in their own app validates ANY of the crypto they're doing on the server. NONE OF IT.

see, the thing is: the reason bluesky isn't just in the Mastodon network is that it would have been fediblocked by now for bad and incompetent moderation and being the floor shitter to everyone else

this is even as its excellent user base is *screaming* for the basics of competent moderation from these rationalist crypto bros who just don't understand the question

the flagship instance of the new AT Protocol network (coming soon!!!) is a floorshitter instance

@davidgerard It's amazing watching a protocol be developed by people with significant blinders on where not only would their work fall apart if their world view changed but so would their life and self worth.

@jookia @davidgerard we took one look at how they were doing "verification" and it was "blat your static user ID into DNS, with no per-domain tweak on it" and we pointed out that this is going to mean the implementations are going to be easy to trick into confusing other domains for yours" and some supporters were like 'youre stupid and full of doodoo' and it turns out it was easy to trick the implementation into confusing other domains :)

@davidgerard this is the thing that's been driving me up the wall over there. there's a ton of cool people! but the way the site is being run - and the focus on "building the protocol" rather than responding to their insane luck in early community establishment - is just... maddening.
