I'd love to get some perspective on the choice of SNES controller. It's a proprietary port, but I'm seeing it crop up more and more for modern-retro devices.

The patent is expired, so it's not really proprietary any more -- it's made by multiple companies, legally. Hyperkin, for a start, and 8BitDo, and a small ocean of nameless Shenzhen companies.
It's also one of the nicest controllers to actually use in the hand, and it has 8 buttons and a good D-pad, and the protocol for reading it is very simple, and requires only a single 8-bit I/O port to accomplish under software control.
