Dear journalists: Facebook and Google are not "quashing" media outlets in Canada. They're declining to participate in the government's (and media's) extortion scam, which demands payment for sending traffic to media sites.
@dangillmor Google and Meta make money advertising. They leverage content from news sites, extract images, article snippets, with attribution and linkage, and people will read the snippet, see the images and may choose to not navigate to the newspaper site. So it is a one-sided profit scheme here, one where G/M profit using content created by others.
I wish it didn’t need to be law, but G/M will make a profit.
If I were the newspaper I would make it so that they couldn’t extract the articles with crawlers, or I would provide yipsen loren type articles for their crawlers.
