I’m pretty sure they always were. I know when I was using lemmy.world I blocked a lot of lemmygrad communities.

I think you’re overthinking it, tankies absolutely do exist and have since stalin’s death, the term was coined by a communist reffering to more extreme members of their own party. If this is your first time running into them I honestly envy that.
