What is your tier list of places to visit in England? - LemmyWorld

As someone who grew up in London and not explored much of England, what is your tier list of places to visit in England and would love to know why.

Start with Winchester. It’s just outside of London, easy enough to drive/train/coach. Really beautiful historic city, with a cathedral, The Great Hall, a 1000 year old pub. Good range of shops, some nice boutique places, bunch of decent restaurants and other eateries. It’s also really walkable as a city, can take a wander up St Catherine’s Hill, start the South Downs Way or any of the other many trails about. Should be a good jumping off point for your exploration.
Things to do - Visit Winchester

From world class attractions, educational museums and inspiring galleries to counrtyside walks and shopping - Winchester has it all.

Visit Winchester
Canterbury and/or York should be on the list
Lake District is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been
Totally agree with this, especially if you like a bit of walking. Some very good routes that end with a pub if you so inclined.
St Ives in Cornwall, looks like a picturesque seaside town with a lovely beach
Obviously one for those with an interest in plants and flowers but RHS Wisley is vast and breathtaking. In my view the best garden in the country, the variety and quality is seriously impressive - and there’s regularly new displays, loads of educational info, and great food options
Shame about all the road works in the A3/M25 junction next to it though at the moment

Oh hey look, it’s Warwick castle. You can paddle along that bit of the river in boats from St James’ park and get an almost identical view (just not with the elevation). Think this might have been taken from the bridge?

If you go there, you absolutely have to get the fruit scones from Thomas Oken Tea Rooms. They’re bigger than your fist and absolutely divine.

Would also recommend Dough & Brew’s pizza if you’re in the area.

  • The Lake District is amazing, well worth a trip - there are parts that look like something out of Jurrassic Park - big mountains with rolling forests and steep valleys.
  • The Yorkshire Dales is great - you’ve got Malham with the truly awesome geological fault, Gordale Scar, and wild swimming in Janet’s Foss - then all sorts of wild swimming in the rivers, strange rock formations at Briham, and much more.
  • Edale in the Peak District is an amazing place, lots of limestone hills to climb, interesting mines to explore, and strange village customs to take part in - and a lot of no-nonsense, delicious food.
  • Whilst a PitA to get to, the Devon and Cornish coastlines are so nice they seem like they don’t belong in England! Picture Postcard stuff.
  • Old cities like Oxford, Cambridge, York and Bath are really nice.
  • Bristol is a particularly lively, young-person focused City with a great music and arts scene.
  • Brighton & Hove is a really nice seaside town that’s absolutely buzzing and has tons of amazing restaurants.
  • Blackpool is a shit hole, but it’s Blackpool so worth a visit!
  • Alton Towers (near Stoke) is the best theme park in the country IMO.
Honestly, anywhere in the southwest is beautiful. Actually, the whole countryside is, let’s be honest.
