App Store turns 15 today, what were your first apps? Here’s mine:
@BasicAppleGuy Fun thread! Here's mine:
@gruber @BasicAppleGuy My first was AIM!
@_ @gruber @BasicAppleGuy Mine too, apparently

@theory @_ @gruber @BasicAppleGuy

Wild that we all have some combo of the first three

@gruber @BasicAppleGuy And now I’m super curious why it took me 8 days longer than everyone else to get my iPhone
@gruber @BasicAppleGuy I'm pretty sure I was downloading apps to my jailbroken iPod Touch on day one.

@gruber @BasicAppleGuy Sure, why not…

Advent (as in Colossal Cave, 1000-pt version)
iTunes Remote
AstroTilt
WeatherBug
Shadows Never Sleep
(and, skipping a couple of boring ones…)
Frotz
TouchTerm SSH

@gruber @BasicAppleGuy Oh, AIM… I can’t recall if there was a workable notification system for a third party IM client at that stage short of opening the app.
@gruber @BasicAppleGuy loved this idea. Interesting how few apps I still have on my phone from the first year of the App Store, let alone my first 8!
@gruber @BasicAppleGuy the thing I find fun is which do people still have installed!
@panzer @gruber @BasicAppleGuy I’m so bad at cleaning up apps I don’t use…
@gruber @BasicAppleGuy here’s my first 8. I would never have remembered that facebook was in the App Store on day one.
@gruber @BasicAppleGuy Really surprised to see that Enigmo is still on the App Store, and shocked that it’s even updated to run on the iPhone 14 Pro. Other than that, pretty typical college student apps 😂

@gruber @BasicAppleGuy If you wanna see your true first app downloads you have to look at your account history or you’re missing removed apps like Lightsaber, Tap Tap Revenge, and NetNewsWire.

Settings > Apple ID > Media & Purchases > Purchase History, then change filters to July 2008, turn off “Paid”, and set Type to “Apps”.

Here’s mine, compared to what’s on the App Store.

@alexjsp how do you change the filters?
@eierund You tap the blue text at the top, see attached image:
@alexjsp are you running the iOS beta? I don’t see the blue text on my end.
@eierund Ah, yeah, I am on iOS 17 beta, so maybe it’s different.
@gruber @BasicAppleGuy what is it with itunes remote? I don’t even remember that
@gruber @BasicAppleGuy I wish I knew mine, unfortunately since my first Apple account was logged in from Syria, Apple locked it, maybe deleted it, not sure, but indeed I cannot log in 🥲
@gruber @BasicAppleGuy sadly didn’t get my first iPhone until September 2009, when the 3G became available in Australia not on a contract… still a fun exercise! I remember Sheep Launcher - so silly but so much fun. That you can still see the original listings of the long gone apps is amazing.
@gruber @BasicAppleGuy Here’s mine. You can just see Super Monkey Ball peeking through at the top there, and just offscreen is Tetris. That was my first day haul.
@gruber @BasicAppleGuy
Most interesting in terms of recent discussions, articles, podcasts is how games were so prominent and strategic to Apple’s business revenues from the App Store.
@BasicAppleGuy
I was late to the party - work required Blackberry until I could convince them to open up.
@gruber @BasicAppleGuy Doing this reminded me of how awesome Trism was, so I redownloaded it to try out again.

@gruber @BasicAppleGuy Fun thread! Here’s mine.

Carling Tap was one of those “virtual beer mug” apps, tilt the phone to “pour.” lol. App Store let me download it just now, but it won’t launch past the age verification screen 🙃

@gruber @BasicAppleGuy it kills me to see so many amazing games on the list that are gone for good. I‘d pay premium just to play Dark Nebula again.
@gruber How’s the battery percentage not turned off?
