I will not be suspending/defederating Threads[.]net on my Mastodon instances, and I've written a post to explain why and preemptively answer some questions for everyone who trusts me with their accounts:

https://fediverse.neat.pub/2023/07/10/threads/

I hope this explanation makes sense for those who wanted us to defederate with Threads. Federating with Threads does not impact your own privacy, contrary to popular claims. We still reserve the right to limit/silence Threads (and likely will after they launch, I elaborate on this in the post above).

Threads – Fediverse Communications

@jonah So Threads is building on Mastodon. That's interesting. I imagine they'll make some changes and customizations to the code. Will they be contributing their changes back?

@WigglyFingers it's technically not built on Mastodon, but it will supposedly make its posts available and read posts from Mastodon via the same "ActivityPub" standard which Mastodon uses.

Since they're not using any of Mastodon's code itself (they're just making Threads communicate with the internet in the same way Mastodon does), Mastodon's license wouldn't apply and they wouldn't have to publish their code as a result.

@jonah Thanks for your thoughts on this. I feel like it is well-reasoned and you have a good set of contingency steps.

I use .party daily since November. I've enjoyed my time here quite a bit and have made a donation to make it more tangible! I hope you keep the servers lit for quite a while!

@jonah thanks for the sensible policy and solid explanation
@jonah #MstdnParty has been down for approx 12 hours now. Are there any updates?
@jonah love this! While I absolutely love Mastodon, there are just some users who will only migrate to the most popular social networks, like Threads. There are tons of people I’d love to follow on Threads that have no Mastodon account. As you state, I’ll probably use my Mastodon account more now, and my Threads account less because I’ll have all the benefits of Mastodon while having the content that I regularly miss here!
