“For #Threads to survive, it needs to do this thing I want” — the people #Meta least cares about catering to.

Meta wants Threads to be a mostly vapid, positive, advertising friendly place and will absolutely sacrifice good content to get there. And they are probably right from a business sense.

Which is why I’ll go blue in the face trying to convince people who don’t like Threads or Twitter to use Mastodon. A for-profit free-for-all space will always cater to the most and most profitable.

@jacobschumer

But to me the "sell" that everyone is missing (because, you know, Masto hates capitalism or whatever)

"Hey companies. You know how you can OWN your own website and email? What if you could do that for 'twitter' and not worry about all that blue check stupidity? Avoid that Eli Lilly situation? Come to mastodon!"

@jrm4 @jacobschumer Big brands can easily set up their own Mastodon instances (perhaps with not just one account, but several, focusing on different products or different markets), but why would they? Very few people want to see that stuff, so many other instances would defederate. No one comes to Mastodon to be advertised to, do they?

@TRiG @jacobschumer

I think that's an oversimplification? At the risk of whatever, I am hoping Mastodon (the present people in it) grow smarter about the difference between "commerce" and "Capitalism?"

Companies are around and they do stuff and having a connection to them, like a website or email, but in a twitter like way should be a win-win if done properly

@jrm4 @jacobschumer People vary in how accommodating they are to business, but most of the Fediverse seems to be at one end of that scale. I'm not sure where I am myself.
