Really interested to see how, or if, Threads impacts Mastodon. Encouraged that the Mastodon team are taking a measured approach to any federation discussion, and hope that other ActivityPub apps do.

No doubt anything with Facebook has to be scrutinised closely, but I feel these networks need to be resilient to for-profit organisations or bad actors coming along too, and there is an opportunity that scale brings.

What to know about Threads

There’s been a lot of speculation around what Threads will be and what it means for Mastodon. We’ve put together some of the most common questions and our responses based on what was launched today.

At the very least it’s nice to be able to communicate with my friends on the platform without having to be on it myself.

That said, if there is an actual threat to the network, then defederation could end up being the right play. I think it’s a bit early though to say if they needs to happen based on what we know, other than it’s Meta, and whether there’s be any significant issues if that was done at a later date if the situation does change.
