I'm curious if there's any research on why people stay on platforms like Facebook and, well, you know the rest, and why so many have apparently moved to the Threads, rather than moving to somewhere in the fediverse. Do most not care about rampant data collection, or are most just unaware that it's actually happening? (I'm assuming that no one still in these places cares so about people constantly trying to sell them stuff, so I won't ask about that.) #Fediverse #Threads #Meta #Privacy #Infosec #Facebook #Twitter
@JerrDansel The few people I've talked to about this told me that they don't care and that they have nothing to hide. I've asked them why do you have blinds on the windows, then that's when they get silent. All of their friends are there, and to make things worse, they don't care about security when it comes to big companies. They think that those companies are doing nothing wrong or they wouldn't be allowed to!
@techygeek your friends don't seem to be alone in their views. in retrospect, I should've done a web search before posting here. Just did one and found this. Sort of dated, and maybe not asking all the right questions, but does provide some insight: https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2018/03/27/americans-complicated-feelings-about-social-media-in-an-era-of-privacy-concerns/
