As a European I am still astonished, that this is the guy, around half of American voters want to be president.
@randahl As a European, can you put in a good word with the immigration authorities for me?
@randahl David French has an interesting hypothesis here: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/06/opinion/maga-america-trump.html
Opinion | The Rage and Joy of Donald Trump’s MAGA America

Come for the community. Stay for the vituperation.

The New York Times
@randahl it's less than a third really, most Americans are quite normal and are being held hostage by a fascist minority. Like pretty much everywhere else soon by the looks of it......
@Lazarou @randahl
yeah there are a ton of disaffected people here. I will say the Dems are hated in many parts of the country. but also some of the people there can't stand Trump so they aren't sure where to go instead. about 50% of the population identifies as Independent, and that is largely driven by dramatic *decreases* in people identifying as Republican (bc of Trump).

even though 2020 had record turnout it was still just 67%
@smitten now compare that to Denmark: 84.1 % for the parliamentary elections of 2022.
@Lazarou
@randahl In fairness, he's not the guy half of America wants to be president. He's the guy half of people who voted wants to be president. Voter turnout is... Not great here. The actual number is still bleak, though. It's somewhere around 25 to 30 percent. The same 25 to 30 percent who loudly and obnoxiously fuck up everything.

@randahl They want the asshole. They want to feel better about themselves, because they're assholes too.

Freedom to be an asshole, that's the real American Dream.

@randahl half is an exaggeration. 40% maybe? But of those, many know he's an idiot. They don't care, they just want to stop social progress.

@JohnShirley2023 aaah yes, the dreaded communist society where people don't die of trivial illnesses because the healthcare everyone needs is payed for by everyone. How awful.

(I live in such a society and from a healthcare perspective it is awesome)

@randahl It was brought in by the public there for a tour, Donald.
@randahl Racist America knows they have lost but he is their last hope of racist survival.
@randahl Trump is an embarrassment. It's like having diarrhea from a bacteria, temporarily--one is embarrassed... As an American I'm astonished that Italy has a neo-fascist leader again, and the UK has brexited, dumped its efforts for addressing climate change, installed a guy who cares only about moneyed interests to run the country...and then there's this: Fascism haunts Europe again
https://peoplesdispatch.org/2022/10/26/fascism-haunts-europe-again/
Fascism haunts Europe again : Peoples Dispatch

Journalist Aunindyo Chakravarty talks about the rise of Nazism and explains how whenever capitalism is in crisis, capitalists always back anti-people, anti-democratic forces to stop any form of socialism

Peoples Dispatch
@randahl well, if you've visited here, you'd see more than half of the people are complete idiots
@randahl @Adam_Cadmon1 And as an American, I too am equally astonished. :(
@randahl around 20% of the population voted for him.
@randahl I live in New Mexico and I suspect it's a reasonable example of the general split. The center of the state and the NE and SW corners are reliably Democrat. Most people you meet are normal i.e. not rabidly xtian fascists. Then there's the SE and NW corners, ugh. Chock full of "Trump Won" flags with blue stripes flapping from huge trucks. The normal people try not to go into the crazy areas and when the crazies come into the normal areas they head straight for Walmart and Crackerbarrel.
@randahl scary in Florida that the GOP not for Trump wants Desatan instead!
@randahl I am equally astonished and appalled that so many in my country have fallen under the sway of his grift.
@randahl someone really must do something about all the cocaine
@[email protected] as a Canadian I feel the same way... Americans are 🙃
@randahl it’s not half of Americans fortunately. I don’t know how it’s all reported to you so please don’t give credit to the radical tRumpsters. (If only they were literate)
@randahl as an American I am horrified.
@randahl *NEARLY half of US VOTERS. The most votes he got in an election was about 22% of US adults.
@joejoefashosho I agree and I have corrected the toot.
@randahl
As an American, I too, am deeply astonished.
