warning on Threads and data: Facebook will do its best to out you as thoroughly as possible
@davidgerard please tell me this isn't real. That sounds like something out of black mirror
@beyond9thousand sounds like something out of Facebook
@davidgerard @beyond9thousand yep, their real names policy really is something else
@philpem @davidgerard @beyond9thousand they locked me out of my account and demanded ID. What they got was heavily redacted. And they still don't have my legal name.
@shanti they did the same to me, ironically on my real-name account. But they won't accept my ID so I'm locked out forever, I guess. @philpem @davidgerard @beyond9thousand
@yingtai @philpem @davidgerard @beyond9thousand seriously?
I wouldn't mind, but the "real name", I was using the name that everyone knows me as, nó one knows me by the name on my ID. That's my first gripe.
Second, a quite abusive guy was on there, and using a name that most definitely wasn't his, but sounded like a "real" name. Do you think they asked that prick for ID ever?
Seems they just don't like non Anglo based names. How not at all racist.
@shanti @yingtai @davidgerard @beyond9thousand That's how I've seen Facebook work in general, so it wouldn't surprise me. Had a friend with a non-Anglo name, same problem. "John Smith" type names? People can report-bomb them all they like, it must get auto-approved on the backend. Some kind of spam report filter. Makes sense from a tech POV, but I agree it's pure ick.
@philpem @shanti @davidgerard @beyond9thousand I would like to clarify that my not-real-name Facebook account is fine and it uses the same name as this Mastodon account. So in my case the differentiating factor was not racism, but how long the account had been neglected.

@davidgerard @beyond9thousand

This is one of the many reasons for our vehement #NoMeta responses to #threads.

@beyond9thousand @davidgerard I have heard similar stories involving mental health professionals, entertainers - including drag queens, and of course trans folk. More commonly Facebook suspends the account until the name is "corrected" or they provide legal documentation for the new name, but just changing it behind someone's back has also happened.
@beyond9thousand
Nah, it's part of the Facebook terms that you have to use your legal name...
