Quick note on #threads: I am really hoping it will be easy for users to set up an account, and then port it straight out to an existing #mastodon acount.

For organisations or government bodies, this would allow them to run their own instances, and federate with systems like Threads without being their prisoner, or even without losing their initial Instagram social graph.

But the real win is still the point where Twitter might be forced to do the same.

@jim I highly doubt that #Threads will ever allow users to port their account to #Mastodon. In fact, they don't even provide an option to delete your Threads account without also deleting your linked #Instagram account.

@viron_r I completely understand the skepticism, but they have made public statements saying this is going to be allowed.

(BTW, if you move server on Mastodon, your old profile stays on the old server, for reasons of link preservation etc, so it is not unreasonable for Threads to do the same.)

@jim What kind of remedies can the CMA order, if (very optimistically) it had the will to promote FLOSS and open standard interoperable social media? Cf. on #DMA

DM #interoperability with Facebook/WhatsApp/Instagram is the first step we know for DMA. But already we see a gallery of anti-competitive pushes for the new product, like blatant self-preferential treatment within Instagram: https://mstdn.social/@fringemagnet/110665602604825181 Competitors should match each of these with a request for equal treatment, like: * API to post to #Instagram story or feed in the same way; * importing follow relations from Instagram; * notifying Instagram followers of a new social media account.

@nemobis I doubt it can do much around FLOSS regarding the private practices of private companies, but it will be able to make orders for #interoperabilty requirements. See the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill's explanatory notes https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/bills/cbill/58-03/0294/en/220294en.pdf
@nemobis The DMA surprisingly missed the boat on this, and introduced interoperability only for IM systems.

@jim So CMA could order Instagram and Facebook to interoperate with Mastodon gGmbH and Twitter through some reasonable existing standard, and in doing so it would effectively be ordering the use of the ActivityPub protocol, no?

As for the DMA, I understand art. 7(2) is very restrictive https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2022/1925/oj#007.002 but are you saying Mastodon is categorically excluded from any DMA action by art. 1(3)(b) even if there are some broader articles like 5(4), 6(4), 7(1), 18(1)?

Regulation - 2022/1925 - EN - EUR-Lex

@nemobis I'm no expert on the DMA but that's my understanding - there were discussions on including social media but it wasn't included in the end
