The best part for me of being on mastodon as opposed to other social media platforms is that here I don't get fascist thoughts injected straight into my eyeballs dozens of times a day. That's really what made me stick around initially, that I could have social media without feeling angry all the time

Yeah you can make a lot of hay about the ability of servers to defederate, and I'm paranoid about it too, especially when admins have done it after throwing tantrums, only to reverse it shortly after, leaving all follow links between servers broken

But its a fact that admins being able to say "uh no none of that" is why I can use mastodon without anger in my heart. Because over 99% of the time defederation is just throwing out the trash. You can't have one without the other (although it'd be good if social links could be restored upon refederation)

@eniko I was thinking about this the other night. I was like "Why do I feel more comfortable posting on Masto than anywhere else? Could it be because I feel safer?" And I absolutely know now that twitter just did not make me feel safe at any point.

And that's wielded as a kudgel sometimes but most of the time it's responsible for making the place safer for those on it

I honestly almost forgot all these outright fascist accounts like Libs of Tiktok even existed in the first place. It's honestly just weird to see them in screenshots and the thought that people willing engage with that platform.

@eniko using other social media started feeling like it was to see how much people hate me but mastodon has remained about seeing what cool people are up to. I can't escape that hatred in other areas of life but at least now I don't see it when I'm just wanting to look at cool tech people and possums.

@Aviva_Gary @eniko there's also the issue of rabbit holes which are completely gone here.

If I go down one, it's my own choice. I feel like when I talk to my brother who is a heavy TikTok user, he's being pushed so far down them that he doesn't even recognize it.
