Well after reading a bit more about mastodon. This whole thing still is confusing me. All I’m seeing is just posts from a handful of people and that’s it. Then when I go to federated, I just get a bunch of non-English posts, even though my settings are apparently set to show only English posts 😵‍💫 #help #confused
@tcsd Your home feed is only posts from people you follow. It’s said you need over 200, maybe as many as 500 people to follow to fill out your home timeline. Your local timeline is your server/instance. This is why some people land on a topic specific server so that their local timeline is full of exactly what they are interested in. Others go for a large, diverse server for the variety. Your federated timeline is everything. I don’t know why if set to English you are getting other languages.
@MiriShuli oh I see. Maybe that’s why then. I think I’m only following maybe 10 people lol. I’ll have to check the local and if it’s not what I’m looking for I’ll transfer to a more specific server. This one I’m on is general afaik. Thanks 😊
@tcsd The greatest thing about Mastodon is also the thing that take some getting used to. There is no algorithm to push toots into your feed. Nothing showing you things you might like. You have to search it out and follow it. 😂. Don’t forget on most apps you can also follow hashtags, which is a superb way to find folks who enjoy what you enjoy. Be sure to include hashtags in your posts so other can find you. Enjoy!
@MiriShuli yeah I think I’m slowly getting it. I guess I’m just so attuned to pushy algorithms figuring out what I want 🤣 baby steps 😁
