@ivory I jumped into mastodon to support you guys after being a loyal tweetbot user and now I’m getting hit up for extra $$ on the macos version. Kind of feels like I should be able to restore purchases and get macos access. Any thoughts?
@ivory I understand this from a business perspective. As a user who is not involved in your business, just a fan of your products … I’m not invested in mastodon enough yet. I supported you when you did tweetbot. I supported you when Elon was a … yeah. But now I feel like this is just a bit too much to ask and it feels, not good.
@jeffmilton That's understandable if you aren't invested here yet. But we are and have to charge what we do to be sustainable as a business here. Otherwise we might as well close shop and go do something else. We were forced to charge very little to survive on Twitter and there's a reason why the Mac app stopped getting updates for years. We are trying to avoid that from happening here.
@ivory I am happy to live in a world where people love what they do. I hope that mastodon becomes so valuable to me that I don’t even second guess the cost. Right now I’m like … but where’s my value for what I’ve already put into this continued relationship? As someone who is back in school to get a compsci degree, do you have any recommendations on how mastodon could become the value I’m hoping for?
@jeffmilton Following and interacting with the right people make the biggest difference. We always suggest reading the Local and Federated timelines to find interesting people to follow and interact with. Follow a lot of people that seem interesting to you and don't feel bad about Unfollowing people you later realize you don't want to read anymore.
@jeffmilton@ivory It kind of feels to me that these are two separate brand-new programs, and if we’d like to support good independent software development, we users should be jumping at the chance to pay a reasonable amount for each of them.
@tom@ivory I suppose it’s just the surprise of having already bought the year long subscription, being surprised to find out I had to pay more to use it on my Mac. I’ll probably just use the other mastodon apps for the mac instead until mastodon becomes more valuable to me. Certainly a negative experience overall.
@jeffmilton@tom You can upgrade to Universal which gives you access to iOS and Mac at a discounted price and Apple will refund the pro-rated amount of unused time on your iOS-only sub.
@ivory@tom is that automatic or do I have to call them? This was the exact point of my frustration is that it seemed like I had to buy what I already bought all over again. But, if I can get some credit automatically that’s great news!!!!
@jeffmilton@tom It happens automatically. It's just important that you do the upgrade properly. So if you already have an iOS sub, you upgrade through Ivory for Mac. There should be an “Upgrade to Universal” button on Ivory's subscription window.
