Arctic Climate Change: Methane Springs Could Drive More Warming

It’s yet another reminder that the “finding out” stage of climate change is upon us — and of the need for more action to rapidly cut greenhouse gas emissions

@GottaLaff Our decline is speeding up and soon, there will no place to hide from the havoc humans have imposed on the earth.
@MichelleRNCHPN There's no place now. Even up here in BC we're having hot weather way more often.
@GottaLaff So very disturbing. One never thinks of Canada as having hot weather.
@MichelleRNCHPN It does now. Our neighbor told us it used to be rare, but now it's a regular thing.
@GottaLaff @MichelleRNCHPN Hot is uncomfortable for humans. But desiccated trees are going to be more than uncomfortable. The line demarcating conifer vs deciduous must move north somehow. The fast way is with fire.
@obviousdwest Water. That's an issue. The big one. @MichelleRNCHPN
@GottaLaff @obviousdwest Absolutely. My water district has done a good job sourcing water and our conservation efforts are paying off...at least for now.

@GottaLaff

It is.

One thing for sure, I would put bet money on the fossil fuel industry is figuring out how to capture and use this methane gas to burn as fuel which would probably heat up the climate.

Off-topic, my fear is deep frozen viruses that may come alive at some point of the defrost that we are not aware of nor prepared for.

@paul Mine too, along with every other possibility
@paul Capturing it and burning it would almost certainly be preferable to just venting it to the atmo.
@GottaLaff oh crap, I was wondering when this would happen. They said it would happen, and now here we are
@Lazarou And we could have stopped it
@GottaLaff even now our leaders try to fob us off, 'now is not the time' they say, as the air turns toxic and the sky orange.

State governments that won’t legislate State Employee Pension Funds divest from fossil fuel be like - me, at the casino in the back room of Rick's Café Américain.
Fossil Fuel Divestment Bill Stalls in California As Unions Split

Advocates for divesting California’s major public pension plans from fossil fuels say they will keep pushing next year for a bill that has stalled amid division between labor unions.

@GottaLaff Wait till the permafrost melts- you ain’t seen nothing yet. Seriously.

@GottaLaff

It's such a big thing that it's difficult to grasp. The full impact of the realization that most of civilization will die off within 100-200 years may damage us if we don't have some kind of mental buffer.

It's very scary, even if our understanding is fragmented.

@the_Effekt I know. It's completely overwhelming.
