Even if I decided I wanted to try it I wouldn't after reading this: Threads profile can only be deleted by deleting Instagram account, Meta says
https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/06/threads-delete-profile-instagram-meta/

>In a ‘Supplemental Privacy Policy,’ Meta explains: “You may deactivate your Threads profile at any time, but your Threads profile can only be deleted by deleting your Instagram account.”

>The rationale, Meta elaborates on the policy page, is that a Threads profile is part of the user’s Instagram account.

TechCrunch is part of the Yahoo family of brands

The main reason I won't touch it? The permissions they want are ghastly:
@BatsInLavender @rysiek even if you looked past /everything else/, the core experience is shit! no hashtags, only on fucking mobile, and the timeline is FILLED by algorithmic bullshit, and isnt even chronological!

@BatsInLavender @briankrebs

I read their intention is to connect Threads to the wider fediverse, as it's code is primarily based on that.

When you sign into Threads you just use your Instagram login. But if you didn't want to connect them you could just make a burner IG profile. I'll check my DNS logs to see what Threads is connecting to if you're interested, but I'd like to see someone run it with Wireshark scanning what it sends out.

@BatsInLavender I wonder if that will apply if someone wants to move their account to somewhere else in the Fediverse?
@BatsInLavender So Threads isn't useful for Twitter refugees who aren't interested in Instagram?
@BatsInLavender so does that mean if you have instagram, you automatically have a threads account? i hope that isn’t the case. though it could be the final push i need to drop instagram completely
@BatsInLavender and this, of course, is why they're not deploying in the EU; there, this is illegal.
